I have been chewing on this page for so long that I've had to draw it in a hurry :p. Also because I spent my Saturday gathering some missing parts of my 11th Doctor cosplay (...my first cosplay ever; this will be so weird) and finally going to the cineam to see Song of the Sea, which, by the way, is really worth watching.

Anyway just in time: page 165.

***

Arthur has pulled the sword from the stone. Having, in one swoop, freed several British slaves as well as the Irish warrior Morholt, Arthur and his men now try to make it home before they get caught by a Saxon patrol. But they haven't got far when they run into King Pellinore of the Jutes, who challenges Arthur to a fight. Has Arthur bitten off more than he can chew?

Oh, no - I can't watch it! You are too cruel, I can't take the suspense :-). You really put so much drama in each page, though I'm normally not a fan of fight-scenes.
The look on Arthurs face in the last picture is great.

Yep, he just broke a family heirloom. (Though he doesn't know yet that it is a family heirloom - but breaking the Sword of Kings is bad enough!)

No no no, don't worry. In a few pages' time, Merlin will explain. And take us to a certain lake.

What I thought, lindahoyland. King Pellinore can't just have shattered excalibur! Surely that was another sword Arthur was using?

Good work, Sigune! Please keep the pages coming.

The Sword from the Stone and Excalibur are two different swords. (I know they are't always, but in Malory they certainly are. And I wouldn't want to miss the iconic 'hand rising from the lake' moment!)

The Sword in the Stone comes from a stone. Excalibur comes from a lake. So not to worry!

(MY worry is how on earth I can make Excalibur as pretty as the sword from the stone...)

Oh, but in some versions it IS the same sword... Arthurian 'canon' is about as loose as it gets. In this case I take my cue from Malory. I want that hand rising from the lake, ya know?
