This week, scribbling during my commute, I have introduced Arthur - again. I think this must be my fourth or fifth attempt to get him to enter this story. Bloody Arthur. He's so difficult! But the good news is, I have become very fond of him indeed.

Plans for the website are also slowly getting a more definite shape. I will be posting the sketch pages on there and gradually replace them with the definitive ones. The design of the site is still a big blank to me though; it seems like I'm really not cut out to be a designer :/. I know that I don't like any of the stuff I have come up with so far, but I don't seem to be able to figure out how to make something that I do like. Ah well. I'm still continuing my Webdesign classes, so maybe they will give me some ideas in time.

And now: story.

It is the day after the heavy thunderstorm in which Morgana seems to have ... disappeared, and we are back at Dunpendyrlaw.

We have arrived at page 90! That is to say, if I count from the very beginning we have arrived at page 220 of what is clearly becoming a sprawling monster of a comic :p. I did say I'd still be working on it when I am ninety.

Anyway: have some story (even if it is only one image today).

Last weekend I went on an exceedingly decadent Watercolour Splurge. I bought no less than 24 watercolours - half-pans, pans and tubes. It ... was crazy. Especially if you know that I already own more than enough colours and that a decent painter doesn't need more than 12. But I had a reason: my 24 new acquisitions were at a 50 % discount, and this for truly excellent quality paint - made in Belgium. I kid you not. So I thought, it's now or never, let's just pick up all the tints I haven't got yet. So that is what I did. Very, very satisfying, that.

Mmmm, watercolour. Keep an eye out for New Paint Trial Sketches :-).

Anyway: story now. Have you noticed, next week we'll hit page 90! Of Book 2! Woohoo!

Sir Gawain, Lady Florie and Lady Ragnell have started their journey to the States; Lady Kundry has left her homeland for Italy.

...I am talking about their Artist Card alter egos, of course.

[livejournal.com profile] lunafish, you should find a deep pink envelope in the mail.
[livejournal.com profile] ballincollig, keep an eye out for a red envelope.
[livejournal.com profile] cabepfir, your envelope will probably arrive first - it is a dark blue one.

I hope the knight and his ladies reach their destinations safely, and that the recipients may find some pleasure in looking at them!

And now for this week's page...

King Lot's projected adventure in a haystack is rudely interrupted by a thunderstorm. Inside the house, Gawain is telling his brothers the story of Lugh Long Arm's heroic fight with Balor of the Evil Eye. To everyone's surprise, King Lot decides to star as Balor - with much gusto.

We now leave the royal household of Lothian to their sleep and go to have a look at how someone else is faring...

Um.

My attempt at giving little gifts last week was NOT a success, in case anyone was wondering. Clearly if I want to do something that feels like a little extra to you, or gives you some pleasure, it will have to be something else than to offer little paintings.

What do you like better, readers? Please let me know. Because clearly I am very bad at guessing :P.

For now, have a new page.

I did promise something special for Valentine's Day... Well, here it is! I painted four little portraits of Gawain and his three wives. And I intend to give them away to my handful of tenacious readers, as a token of my appreciation.

 photo valentine2013_texture_zps7b745189.png

THE RULES:

Send me an e-mail at gawaincomic @ gmail dot com and mention the couple of your choice and your snail mail address.

You can choose EITHER Gawain & Ragnell, Gawain & Florie or Gawain & Kundry.

The first person to claim their couple will be sent Gawain + the wife of choice snugly together in an envelope of love ;). The second and third respondents will be sent one remaining lady each.

The portraits are 6.4 x 8.9 cm artist cards, inked with Staedtler pens and painted with watercolour. They are one of a kind and the first artist cards I have ever made. They'll come signed ;).

Good luck! :D

Reader, I have a question for you.

[livejournal.com profile] _vocalion_ has been working her way through Brothers & Sisters recently. Because she is a very nice person, she hasn't complained, but I know she has not had it easy. Because of the blog format, she has had to do a lot of clicking back and forth between individual pages and a master post or tag list, which isn't very practical, I admit.

Exactly because the blog format is not very user-friendly for webcomics, I undertook the attempt to build my own Wordpress-powered website, gawaincomic.com, with a plugin especially for comics. True, because this whole site thing turned out to be a Frankenstein monster when I had actually been expecting a cute kitten, the site still doesn't look at all as I hoped it would - and because I have been reserving it for the definitive version of the comic, it is still empty to boot.

I have now started to toy with the idea of posting the sketch pages on gawaincomic.com. That way, the entire story could be clicked through easily from beginning to end, and navigating by chapter is also possible. I could then replace the sketch pages by the definitive ones as they are created.

Good idea? Bad idea? Unnecessary? Please tell me what you think!

The poll is on Dreamwidth because LJ doesn't want me to create any with my ad-free account.

Should I post my sketches on gawaincomic.com?
  • Yes, the story will be easier to follow.

  • No, keep gawaincomic.com for the final, pretty version of the comic.

  • Other, which I'll explain in a comment.

I don't know about other places in the world, but today is poetry day in Belgium, and so to honour that, I would like to share a piece of Arthurian poetry. It is a fragment from Alfred Tennyson's Passing of Arthur, and if I am entirely honest, it always makes me cry because it is so beautiful and sad. In fact, now that I think of it, tales of Arthur's end are responsible for about 90 % of the times fiction moves me to tears...

This episode takes place shortly after Gawain's death. King Arthur has received a message to warn him that while Gawain and he were in France to fight Lancelot, Mordred has seized the throne. Arthur hurries back to Britain, intending to battle Mordred at Camlann. On the eve of battle, the King is visited by Gawain's ghost, who tells him that the next day he will die.

***

That story which the bold Sir Bedivere,
First made and latest left of all the knights,
Told, when the man was no more than a voice
In the white winter of his age, to those
With whom he dwelt, new faces, other minds.

For on their march to westward, Bedivere,
Who slowly paced among the slumbering host,
Heard in his tent the moanings of the King:

"I found Him in the shining of the stars,
I mark'd Him in the flowering of His fields,
But in His ways with men I find Him not.
I waged His wars, and now I pass and die.
O me! for why is all around us here
As if some lesser god had made the world,
But had not force to shape it as he would,
Till the High God behold it from beyond,
And enter it, and make it beautiful?
Or else as if the world were wholly fair,
But that these eyes of men are dense and dim,
And have not power to see it as it is:
Perchance, because we see not to the close;—
For I, being simple, thought to work His will,
And have but stricken with the sword in vain;
And all whereon I lean'd in wife and friend
Is traitor to my peace, and all my realm
Reels back into the beast, and is no more.
My God, thou hast forgotten me in my death:
Nay—God my Christ—I pass but shall not die."

- Alfred, Lord Tennyson
from Idylls of the King
