I would like to launch an appeal to you:

In their latest episode, the staff at [livejournal.com profile] snapecast has asked their listeners to compose epitaphs for Snape. I am really not good at this sort of thing, but I know that many of you are, and therefore I would ask you to please, please contribute a short crazy poem or a snarky line or two.

Send your epitaphs to severus (at) snapecast (dot) com; or if you like to send a soundbite, you can phone Snapecast through Skype; their username is (surprise!) "snapecast". The deadline is 11 August.

For myself, I clearly haven't recovered yet from the blow that was Deathly Hallows, and all I could come up with was a bitter

Here lies Snape.
By life a complex character, he died a stereotype.
May his fate remind you of the harm a Mary Sue can do.

I know I'm not exactly doing Snape a favour here, so I was hoping that one of you might.

I think that you should send exactly that epitaph.

If I can come up with something, I'll send it, but living people don't need an epitaph, do they?

Want to crosspost/link it on snapedom?

[livejournal.com profile] snapedom! Yes, good thinking - I still have to get used to the fact that it's there ;D. Incidentally, can I post questions too? I'd love to hear people's opinions on the wacky sequence of the Werewolf Incident and the Worst Memory.

That's true, but sometimes they do get one, when they are believed dead and no body is recovered... It's just a good opportunity to sum Snape up, regardless of whether you (want to) believe he's dead, right? :-) And, well, I used it to be venomous about DH of course. I did send it, by the way. It's what I feel; I just hope it doesn't upset the Snapecasters, because that's not what I mean. I listened to their latest episode last night, and it was very good - balanced too.

As long as it's Snape related, you can post anything, except for fiction and art, there are other comms for that. Everyone can recommend their own and their friends' work every Friday.

I was just joking with the dead people thing. Canon is canon, and for many people he's dead. For me, he lives on in my own and other writers' head a lot more than in JKR's head, we love him more, too, and thus I have no problem with going AU.

Even if the epitaph is bitter, the last line is pure brilliance, and best of all, absolutely true.

You know, looking back, even when he had the Grim following him like a faithful puppy all through the series I never thought she would kill him, not even when I was convinced he was Evil...oh well...the woman's crazy and we all know that, plus, you did give him a life in fandom and I think for our purposes that does count. :D

You know, if you inserted 'canon' in 'Here lies Snape', it would be perfect as a header on snapedom. May we use it?

Sure, why not? ...It does sound a bit negative, though - I mean, if you want to strike an optimistic Snape-note in the community after the annoyance of DH, this is perhaps a bit, well, too bitter. But if you want it, by all means take it :-).

I would insert the canon Snape. And put it on the user info, most likely. Or maybe on an icon. And of course I'll give you credit. Thank you!
Bitter? Oh yes. I don't think snapedom will be some happy-clappy 'snape is not dead, lahdidah' community. Although we'll certainly do our best to point out how he would have walked away. ;)

We're thrilled to receive it, and it's exactly what we're looking for. Among the fandom (and even among the [livejournal.com profile] snapecast crew) the response to Snape's death was as multilayered as his character. We're hoping the epitaphs we receive reflect as many reactions as possible.

We'd love very much to have your voice reading this. Any chance of that?

I will have to see what I can do - I'd have to buy a new headset in order to make it possible. The one that I have, "guaranteed to work with Skype", has never worked with Skype (as Gina can testify), and I have lately been unable to record with Audacity either, for some reason. Ah well. The old set was a waste of money, a new one shouldn't be. I'll try to arrange things :-).

I have another option that would spare you the need to buy a mic. We've can call you over the phone from the Snapecast Skype account and I can use Pamela to record you onto my computer. This is how the Orson Scott Card interview was done since he doesn't have Skype or anything.

It's okay; I got myself a new headset (I needed one anyway as the old one was never any use - never trust a brand called "Trust") - it's a spiffy one too, and the tests at least yielded results on Audacity as well as Skype (yay!).

So - do I just phone Snapecast on Skype and read the epitaph out? (I've obviously never done this before, on account of, well, the stupid first headset.)

Excellent! You have 2 options.

On Skype, you can call our snapecast account and leave a voicemail when prompted.

or

You can record yourself on Audacity. Convert it to an .ogg file, and attach it in an e-mail to severus @ snapecast dot com

The quality of audacity files is usually clearer than the skype voicemails, but it's up to you which you prefer.

Duly noted, and I'll think of something. When I was reading DH, ironically the song that was playing when I got to *that* part was "Are you the one that I've been waiting for" by Nick Cave, right on the line where the lyrics went; "Stars live their moment, then they die."

& I had to put the book down for a while after that X/

I didn't write my own, but I submitted a text that I felt conveyed his sacrifice perfectly.

Rest in peace, all souls
who have had done with anxious torment,
who have had done with sweet dreams
who, sated with life and hardly born,
have departed from this world:
all souls rest in peace!

Those who only sought for comradeship here,
more often wept but never fled
when no one was there to press
their faithful hand with an understanding look:
all who have parted from here,
all souls rest in peace!

All the souls, who, full of clarity,
became martyrs to Truth,
struggling for sacred faith
but seeking not the martyr's crown:
all who have parted from here,
all souls rest in peace!

And those who never smiled at the sun,
keeping watch on the thorns beneath the moon,
to see God in the pure heavenly light
and look him just once in the face:
all who have parted from here,
all souls rest in peace!

And those who knew no peace
but still had courage and strength to give
on fields strewn with corpses
in a world half asleep:
all who have parted from here,
all souls rest in peace!

~ Johann Georg Jacobi "Litany for the Feast of All Souls"

I'm sorry if laughing is in appropriate here, but I just love your epitaph. I think it's very appropriate. Snape does need a proper send off from fandom (or else a legion of fanfics to counter canon).

me thinks we need China Meiville to compose a goodbye...that guy can write complex characters and whats more he doesn't make them simplistic at the last moment and then kill them off.

my attempt :

'Here lies Severus, More simplistic than we ever imagined, He remains in our hearts and fanfics a more complex, many layered man, Amen.'

Oh, you know I couldn't resist this! I tried to go for something poignant yet witty (like yours!) but in the end could only manage a ban pun. Not surprising in the least, eh?

Thus:

Here lies Snape, all brokenhearted.
