Last weekend, our newspaper reported that my favourite Belgian museum, the Gallo-Roman Museum in Tongeren, is open again after having been closed three years for renovation purposes. Better still: the museum announces an exhibition devoted to my favourite Celtic chieftain, Ambiorix! Massive SQUEEage!!! I'm terribly excited and can't wait for the fifth of December XD.

The wonderful news immediately inspired me to mess with my watercolours and churn out two Ambiorix pictures as well as a Gawain portrait. And for some reason I went a bit overboard painting their mouths. Er.

It's funny how the traditional imagery of Ambiorix, the Muscular, Moustachioed, Axe-wielding Hero makes me want to assert my sly, clean-shaven, impish ephebe instead ;-)...

I painted this one without thinking, really, on paper that is actually not meant for watercolour. But somehow I ended up with a result that I find pretty pleasing. As usual when a picture feels good, it gave me a few ideas for the character's story. If I have something that has enough of a shape, I may start to sketch some pages. I'm concentrating on Gawain & Co at the moment, of course, but when the Muse springs a gift on me, I'm not going to turn it away :-). We'll see.

This is the third picture I drew, but the second that I painted. When I paint one good picture, I feel like doing more, but the subsequent ones are rarely decent. That is the case with this one. It's just no good. That is partly because I haven't got enough of a grasp on Gawain yet. I'm still struggling with my style, and I continue to have difficulties with the Faerie eyes that I have been giving Gawain. I think I may dispense with the tsrange eyes altogether. I notice that more often than not, they are the thing that pleases me least when I draw Gawain. Here, for example, they look completely off. The result is that my hero looks strange without being handsome. Not Good. Bad Sigune, next time better. Last but not least, I can't mix the right reds yet. "The right red" is really quite crucial to a good Gawain :-).

One thing that I keep doing, that doesn't strike me when I'm doing it but sometimes annoys me afterwards, is drawing very long noses. [livejournal.com profile] bettyboop_comic tried to make me stop complaining one day by saying that it's one of the things that make my drawings distinctively mine and that, as it's a personal style thing, it's not a quirk that needs correcting. I don't know. To me it's alright in the first Ambiorix picture and in, say, my Morgana watercolour, but in this one it annoys me.

What I do like about this picture is the paint. It will probably sound odd, but for the longest time I have been trying to get an effect like this - to use very little paint and suggest more of it. I did my best to be very careful and did feel as though I had a lot of control. Oh, and his hair is blond, for once, not yellow :P.

Not so much effeminising my heroes as you are my barbarians, I'd say (but then you'd disagree on the usage of that term, no doubt) so let's just say that you give good effeminisation.
Be seeing you

Yep, I'd definitely disagree on the usage of the term "barbarian", and quite apart from that I'd also be inclined to remind you, who are after all a fan of a bloke called Conan the Barbarian, that one can be both a barbarian and a hero. ;P

But hey, thanks! *g*
