"'It is Morgan le Fay,' he said. 'It is difficult to explain her.'
'I should not try.'"
- T. H. White, The Sword in the Stone (1939)

Gawain Project banner

I know, I know, these days my quotes all seem to come from the same two books. The trouble is that I started this quotes thingy (which I rather like, because it gives an entry a certain finish, you know?) for a story that is entirely new - that is, a story that doesn't exist in the legend. And so, although I have heaps of quotes about Morgana in a variety of books, I can't use all of them here because I'll need them when I get to those parts of the story that are actually being recounted in the books.

- Okay, so that sounds a bit muddled. Let's pass on the the next pages :-).

Oh, first I have to advertise a film. It's not my habit, but it's sort of appropriate, as the wonderful tales about the Irish church are part of my inspiration for this episode of my Gawain comic. Brendan and the Secret of Kells is a wonderful animation film - a beautiful 2D motion picture about a little Irish monk who saves the Book of Kells from being destroyed by the invading Vikings. He gets a helping hand from a fairy called Aisling - and a helping paw from Pangur Bán, the most famous cat in Irish history. The graphics are truly lovely; and of course I can't say anything bad about a story that claims that beautiful books are the most important thing in the world :-).

Tomm Moore's Brendan & Aisling

The film is an Irish/Belgian/French co-production. I am pleased as Punch that a good deal of it was realised by Belgian animators :D. The makers of Brendan don't belong to any of the major studios, but they prove that independent 2D animation deserves being invested in. Go look!
(Note: small children may find the scenes involving wolves and Vikings rather scary.)

Okay. Where were we? - Right, I was telling a story.

What went before:
Having been handed over by his father to Morgana the Fay, Gawain attempts an escape. Alas, the valley in which he finds himself is not called "Valley of No Return" without a reason. Gawain is not the only one stuck there, either: lying on the forest floor is a bunch of men. We left our little hero sitting disconsolately under a tree, where he is found by his strange aunt.

That movie looks interesting!

Aaaah, she got him! I love her even more after this set. "The smell would be unbearable"... ROFL.

These are sketches? ~admires~ I especially love the third panel. That veil has something...

I guess I am making Morgana a bit Snapelike sometimes ;-)... She's not so easy to write - I'm trying to keep a balance between the nasty and nice sides of her. She has to be credible as both, even when she does something extreme.

Glad you are enjoying this :D!

A few will be solved in the near future :).

Morgana can be nice to people she likes. It happens even in Malory! To people she doesn't like, on the other hand...

Ooh - I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of that.

I'm really getting to like Morgana. It looks like Gawain is chummy with her, too, in the last panel. Can't wait to meet the odd women!

No concrit, sorry.

Ha, the odd women! Depending on how I sort out the sequence of the next bit, you'll meet them next weekend, or the one after that...

It's dangerous not to be Morgana's chum, so Gawain taking to her is just as well ;).

I am really enjoying it - glad those knights are not actually dead, but I also think Gawain had better not stray into these woods as an adult - or am I remembering wrongly?

Thanks very much for the link to the movie, too. I want to see that one, and sincerely hope it makes it across the Atlantic. Yay for small, independent studios with a sense of craft!

Tomm Moore is publishing the story of Brendan as a comic too (so far only available in Dutch and French, I fear), so I do think he will go for it and at least try to get the film across the Atlantic :-). I do hope he succeeds.

Gawain as an adult - no comment. Keep reading ;-).

It makes me really happy to know you are enjoying the story XD. (Life after HP fandom can be scary...) Thank you!!

The humor is my antidote against melodrama. If it pops up, that means my story has ripened. - Does that sound very crazy? *g*

Thanks for the rec! The film sounds delightful. Your link doesn't work any longer, but I found it on Amazon Germany and ordered it right away, as he is quite inexpensive, too.

That first image is so lovely!

"Are they dead?" "Goodness, no! The smell would be unbearable!"
*giggles* Of all the possible reasons... I find I like your Morgana even more for this! ;o)
Poor Gawain, though, feeling left behind like that...

Oh, but we ARE odd women!"
:oD

Awesome dialoge here, too!
