For myself I like to call this picture "Logan in the Floating World", because the concept was heavily influenced by ukiyo-e portraits of kabuki actors, like those of Kunisada. I was first introduced to ukiyo-e through my favourite fin-de-siècle artists, like Vincent Van Gogh and Aubrey Beardsley. In the meantime I have grown rather fond of Japanese art, woodblocks as well as sumi-e painting, though I still know very little about either :-).

Incidentally, Wolverine has a Japanese connection! I only found that out after I had started visualising the picture, so my discovery was rather coincidential. It seems that part of Wolverine's backstory is that he has memories of being a samurai; as his memory has been messed with, it is not clear whether the samurai thing is authentic. But still, it's nice :D.

As for this picture of Wolverine, it has a lot about it that is un-Japanese, but that is fine because it is never my intention to copy someone else's style *g*. Inspiration is fine though.

This is a gift to [livejournal.com profile] bettyboop_comic, so please don't use unless he says you can.

My original idea was to make his hair uniformly black, but as I was going for an ukiyo-e feel, I thought I might as well acknowledge the influence by indicating the structure of the hair by leaving some white. In fact for Wolverine that's a good thing in itself because uniform black would have taken away from the peculiarity of his distinctive hairdo :-).

The red make-up is pure kabuki. It doesn't belong to the character of Wolverine, but apart from looking strangely suitable, it also offsets the black and white very nicely, or so I think :-).

Heh. I feel strangely content. For the time being, at least ;-).

This is beautiful. I can definitely see the Japanese influence. I also love their style of prints and design. They do wonders with negative space, and so have you with this piece. I especially love the lines running down toward his neck and in his face that give you just enough suggestion of a form to complete it in your mind.

Not at all what I'd expected, but beyond cool.
You have that rare knack of not merely drawing something, but interpreting it into your own thing. I love it.
Thanks a lot.
And the rest of you: mittens offa this! Ha!
Be seeing you

Like I ever don't compliment your work!
I cannot elaborate on fictitious expectations now that they have been altered in perception by reality.
