Ain't that good news?
Friday, 9 January 2009 01:22 pmThis week is a kind of milestone for the Gawain Project: I know where to start!
I mentioned before that one of the main attractions of the Gawain material is that it allows me to do short stories. The Gawain canon consists of separate adventures. It is a good thing for me to be able to work on stories with a beginning, a middle and an ending and a more or less clearly defined length. However - there is still a whole lot of material and a whole lot of characters. All those characters have backstories that relate to the main plots and have to be explored. I really have to talk about Ygraine and Morgause and Morgana and Arthur if Gawain's story is to make sense. BUT if I have to write and draw four histories as a hors d'oeuvre, when am I ever going to make it to the main dish?
I have to be able to *start* with Gawain and tell one story to which I can then attach other bits. I have now decided which story that is going to be, and I have sketched the first few panels - on the train :). It feels great! Beginnings can be very difficult for me, and I am always worried that I may not be able to find a good starting point. And if I don't have a starting point, the rest of the story doesn't feel like following.
Well: hallelujah.
I have to see if I can scan the first bits (I did them in a Moleskine storyboard booklet, that's not too kindly disposed towards scanning, alas). Not that they are spectacular. I just want to show proof ;).
I also promised a Morgana post. Will do. Clearly my holiday resolution of posting a picture a day was a failure. But hopefully there will be two posts today - there's a certain someone's birthday to celebrate too... *g*
