[livejournal.com profile] lunafish commissioned me to draw a companion piece for Intimacy, which she also owns. I used the same media, but another paper colour. The pieces are supposed to match, but hopefully there is some evolution to be seen in the art :).

(Alas, scanners are unkind to pencils on colour paper :(. The original is really a lot nicer, but...only to be enjoyed offline.)

Working for Lunafish is always special because she gives me completely free rein, even on a very personal piece like this. She didn't want me to send her a scan before shipping the drawing, so I didn't want to post the image until she had actually received it.

I hadn't worked purely in pencils for a long time and was a little bit reluctant to try it again, but I (re)discovered that it is actually very enjoyable. And it was really the only way to do this piece.

Thank you so much, Luna! *hugs*

I love that there's so much to notice--the scrollwork on the couch looks like SS for his name, the points of his nose, chin, locks of hair and right-angled knee, his striped socks. ♥

Thank you!

It's funny - I only start to notice these things myself when you point them out. But until they were all there, the drawing just didn't feel right. I feel kind of bad about doing everything instinctively instead of thinkingly. That means I sometimes need an awful lot of time for the simplest things, and I may never get there at all, wah.

Why do you feel bad about doing things instinctively? That doesn't make sense to me. I had a great conversation with a Dutch sculptor about the habit of "reading" art, which is what I do--noticing symbols and assigning meanings to them. What's cooler is when a person can have a strong emotional response to the visual without it becoming text. You're a reader and a writer, and yet you're still able to "intuit"--to have a strong sense of what you want to say with images, that you don't have to translate into words, even though you're great with words in several languages.

I'm just saying, that's something worth celebrating, even with my own limited vocabulary of the visual.

I think the stripey socks have joined the shoes as one of my trademarks ;). I felt a little bad about the lack of shoes, so I thought I had to make up for them by drawing stipes... *g*

Thank you!

Thank you!

The slippers actually went through different styles. It's hard to imagine what kind of slippers Snape might wear. He just doesn't seem ever to be relaxed enough to wear any! :D

This is fantastic! It's very peaceful, indeed.

Although I do wonder about the cute dog. I've read many fics where Snape had a cat but I don't think I've ever encountered a dog. :)

I haven't either! Snape doesn't seem like a dog person (but it's possible that I think that because I am a cat person :P). The pets in the picture aren't Snape's, though. They are in the picture with him by special request of the commissioner.

I'm really glad you like the picture. Thank you! :)

I think I recognize those sweet pets, and it's wonderful to see them curled up in peace next to Snape. I love the way that left sock is bunching on Snape's leg. :-)

Great job!

Thank you! You're one of the very few people 'in the know' about the pets. I was a bit worried at the start that I wouldn't be able to do them justice, especially Ricky as I've never 'really' drawn a dog before, but he is so cute that he practically drew himself :).

I'm so glad! It felt really personal, also for me. But the very best thing about making something is to hear that it makes someone happy. *hugs*
