Sketchdump :)

Lookie! An all-traditional sketchdump! ;)
I really need to start drawing my next TDH page pronto, but since it is always a good idea to warm up first, I have been doing quite a bit of sketching. That's good. The bad: I don't get to the page stage :/. Eh. Also, despite my intention to do my sketching in appropriate booklets instead of on random sheets of paper, one of the items below is ... an envelope. And I have recently been using loose sheets of drawing paper as well. When it comes to drawing, things rarely go as I plan them. Much like the rest of life, right?
Oh, before I forget: there are some naked bodies involved. Nothing naughty, but I guess some would say NSFW. You have been warned.
Below: pen, pencil and chalk sketches.

Ballpoint pen on envelope :). All Gawain, of course, some better than others. I think the largest figure clearly shows one of the issues of which I have only recently become fully aware: the fact that I need to find a good balance between clothed figures and the bodies under the clothes. I always draw naked figures first and then draw the clothes on top, to help me establish the proportions. But of course clothes obscure much of the human figure, and I don't always seem able to step away from the body structure once the clothes are on. I don't want the characters to look lumpy - but now they tend to look as if they are dressed in wet drapery. Bad Sigune. Must adapt.

Ballpoint pens in a sketchbook (!). You see Guinevere (on the left) and Morgause (far right). I'm really happy with how Morgause looks here. You met her as a young girl in TDH; this is the adult version. The idea is for her to look more conventionally beautiful, and perhaps also more serious, than her impish younger sister.
Guinevere is a difficult matter. I don't seem to get her right. I have so many characters; I am finding it difficult to give them all a visually distinct personality. Then again, maybe my problems with Gwen are also related to the fact that she hasn't appeared in the story yet, so she isn't fully formed as a character either. I guess I'll have to be patient for a while longer :).

This is me breaking out my chalks. Line Girl here bought a Koh-I-Noor "art set" a while ago, simply to feed her addiction to artists' materials, and only later realised that she is just not into toning and stuff. So the art set tends to sit in a box unused. However - now and then it strikes me that toning is something that wouldn't be amiss in my skills range, and then I pick up the chalks, charcoal and Progresso pencils :).
I think you can tell by the toning for which sketches I used photo reference and for which ones I didn't :P. And you can also see that I'm brushing up on anatomy. Whereas brushing up on architecture and perspective is actually EVEN MORE urgent. *sigh*

Date: Monday, 9 August 2010 10:30 pm (UTC)Yes, I agree about the wet draperies - but though they can occasionally be brought out as a special treat, I can't lead people to believe that my characters never dress in dry clothes, right?
I gather from your comment that you understand why I prefer drawing bodies to drawing buildings ;)...

Date: Monday, 9 August 2010 10:38 pm (UTC)I always feel like my sketches are more ... meagre-looking ... than other people's. So this time I thought I'd do something about that ;). Also, I don't know why I don't just try more with my sketches. Most of the time I draw without a purpose - just because I find it amusing to draw little faces. That only goes to show that I lack anything resembling a professional attitude :P.
