Cat picspam ;)

About half a year ago, Miss Mientje very nearly died of a difficult to diagnose toxoplasmosis. In the meantime, she has recovered so completely that it is hard to believe how far gone she was. I had been wanting to take pictures of her for a while now, but in winter there was never enough light for a decent photo. There is now, which is why I am treating (?) you to a picspam of my fully-healed kitty :).

She really is unspeakably cute. She didn't want to do her "stroke me, I'm a sweet little kitty!" act for the camera, so you'll have to take my word on that *g*.

Date: Thursday, 20 May 2010 11:02 am (UTC)It's so strange - the illness brought her to the brink of death in something like three days, but as soon as she was given antibiotics, within a day she looked and behaved as though she had never been ill at all! Cats are tough little critters :). And I'm happy to have a vet who didn't think of giving up on Mientje.

Date: Wednesday, 19 May 2010 06:47 pm (UTC)I'm so glad for you that she got over her illness. I never heard before of a cat actually suffering from toxoplasmosis, just that they can carry the disease... may she live long and prosper from now on!

Date: Thursday, 20 May 2010 11:21 am (UTC)The vet told me that toxoplasmosis is under-diagnosed. In Mientje's case, we didn't realise what was wrong until we got a lab test result. The vet said that cats who suffer from toxoplasmosis usually have symptoms like diarrhoea and puking, but all Mientje had was a bit of fever and no appetite. By the time the lab results were sent to the vet (it took a week!), the cat had nearly died of all sorts of side-effects :(. *shudders* As soon as we had the diagnosis, she could be given the proper medicine and within no more than one day she was her lively self again. (Of course she had to take antibiotics for a whole month, but you could see their effect immediately. It was like a miracle.)
Mientje is a very small cat with a very large attitude ;). She's cute, but she knows it all too well!

Date: Thursday, 20 May 2010 12:15 pm (UTC)One of my other cats, the little red
riding hoodgood-for-nothing SkrÄllan came to us very, very sick; with chronic diarrhea and nearly starved. It took months to find the diagnosis, though, as far as I remember, toxoplasmosis was never among the possibilities. It's allergic, though, she's totally allergic to any kind of wheat (even in side-products like Vitamin E) and lactose intolerant. But with the right kind of food she became the little scalawag she is today. She's the one on the blurry image from Ellygator I mentioned at dA, and on the icon here - with a typical frown *g*.Are tri-coloured cats also considered "lucky cats" in your country?

Date: Friday, 21 May 2010 01:09 am (UTC)In other feline news, we were adopted earlier this week by a neighborhood cat named Smokey. She belongs to a family two houses down, but she's taken a fancy to my daughter and spends all her time on our front porch these days. I loaned her one of the dogs' beds to make her more comfortable during her stay. :-)
I hope you are doing well, and give my regards to Miss Mientje.

Date: Monday, 24 May 2010 08:21 pm (UTC)Smokey is clearly one of those cats with excellent judgement when it comes to humans. Keep her around! But be warned: once you give her a bed, she'll consider it her natural due... *g*
I have just finished the Warlord Chronicles and will be reading Uther & Igraine next. I'm curious! :D
