I agree with you 100% about Snape not learning flying from Voldemort. I think it would be most uncharacteristic for Voldie to teach him such a thing - and very characteristic for Snape to figure it out by himself. I also fully embrace the notion of Snape flying by himself, but making Voldie do it with a magical ointment - for me, 'true' flight belongs to Snape and Lily. My pet theory is that Snape developed a spell inspired by Lily's childish magic: Flight Plan (https://snapecase.livejournal.com/69959.html)
He'd seen it done, and very early on in his life too, so he knew it was at least possible. Voldie - meh. I guess it doesn't help that I don't find him particularly interesting XD.
