I went to see The Desolation of Smaug last Friday. After a not-so-very-positive newspaper review and some grumbling on th'interwebs, my expectations weren't very high. I was even beginning to feel a tinge of regret at having bought the first DVD box and now "having to" get the other two as well. Maybe it was my 'meh' attitude that did it, but as it turned out, the film very much exceeded my expectations. I liked it! I wasn't even bugged by all the not-in-the-book stuff. Somehow this second film even made me like some of the characters with whom I hadn't been able to sympathise much before - Thorin, for instance.
Of course Martin Freeman was brilliant, as always. I adore the way he plays Bilbo. I don't even think of Watson while I watch! I loved Smaug too, though I was the tiniest bit disappointed by the effects they put on Benedict Cumberbatch's voice. Yes, I do get how a dragon should probably sound like it has more mass than a human being, but I can't help being miffed when people mess with a wonderful voice.
I have also watched the entire season 3 of Sherlock, which had unadulterated CumberVoice and lots of other gems, but I don't feel that I can talk much sense about it until I have rewatched it. It zoomed past liek whoa. And the finale left me perplexed (as it was supposed to do of course :p).
ANYWAY. Time to leave the professional entertainment behind and turn to the efforts of amateurs like me. New page! I am sure you have long understood by now which way this episode is going, but I think I have a few surprises in store. Well, insofar as I can surprise with the Matter of Britain, which is, let us say, fairly well known ;).
I'm kind of excited about the coming pages. I'm already laughing at my own stupid jokes and squeeing over some characters who will probably draw blank stares from other people. How silly is that?! Let me just roll my eyes at myself.
*rolls eyes*
