sigune: (Little Gawain)
I did my first digital painting with my Wacom tablet (this is the one, BTW)!

The painting is not brilliant, but it's okay, and it was great fun to do :-). I used Corel Paint and somehow stumbled on the pastel 'brush'. So far I haven't found a paint tool that I like better. Of course, 'so far' is not very far.

I'm feeling very up-and-down about the tablet. It's mostly because, after my initial excitement at my first painting had subsided, I noticed how many traces my first few hours of painting fun had left on my brand-new digital tools :/. The pen nib is already showing obvious signs of wear - not good, since I haven't got any spare nibs and am not sure where to get any - and I have managed to scratch the surface of the tablet. Now don't go thinking deep tears; they are just visible traces, not something you can feel when you pass a finger over the surface. But still - I have only used the thing twice. That's not looking good, is it? All I have been able to come up with is to push the sensitivity switch to the far left, making the pen react to as little pressure as possible.

Any advice on how to take care of a Wacom tablet would be very, very welcome. Right now I'm a bit worried that I might cause permanent damage to it before I get to know it properly :/. At least I got myself a simple one, so whatever happens, I won't have lost a fortune over it...

Also - I guess it's a bit early to say, but right now I can't imagine that I'd ever want to replace my traditional inks with digital ones. That digital pen is just not comparable to a real one. After trying to do linework with the Bamboo, I start to wonder why I ever complained about the lack of control I have with a brush :P. That, and the lines just look ugly. Okay, okay, I'm a newbie - some people work miracles with tablets. But let's be honest: there are many people out there who are better artists than I am, period. And I'm guessing that digital inking is probably not my thing.

Do I sound cranky? I guess I do. And I know why. It's because, ever since I finished The Darkest Hour, I have been mulling over the next chapter - you know, what comes after Lot has brought little Gawain to Morgana - and I just haven't got the proper approach down yet. And that bothers me. NO END. I'm going to be cranky until I have the story sorted out. Meh.

Meanwhile, please bring on the tablet tips :-).
